The Caravan Channel - Site Reviews

Oaklea CL, Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire

This is a CL like no other we have been to.
oaklea1Surrounded by woodland on the edge of the delightful village of Woodhall Spa it is a quiet and peaceful oasis (apart from the odd Lancaster or Eurofighter) in a park like setting. Piotr And Pamela Kalinowski have lived here for thirty years and have planted some 450 specimen trees to create a garden that a stately home would be proud of.
As well as the 10 acres of more formal planting and meadow there is another 6 acres of woodland dotted with camellias, rhododendrons and azaleas and birds and wildlife abound. Visitors are welcome to walk through the woods and all around the garden.
The pitching area is well spaced out among trees with plenty of privacy and is fairly flat. There are two bollards with 3 x16A EHUs plus a water point on each. The site is adults only and dogs are allowed. The owners also request that breathable ground sheets are used and that only natural biodegradable treatments are used in chemical toilets.
oaklea2 Piotr And Pam are extremely friendly and chatty and although they only opened as a CL in 2006 they are already very busy and so booking is pretty well essential. They have just won the New CL of the Year award from the Caravan Club and so can expect even more business. At £11 per night for a van and two persons this is not the cheapest CL, but it is probably one of the most attractive and must rank as one of the best accommodation bargains in the country.
What’s in the area?
Woodhall Spa is a large village with leafy, tree lined avenues situated in attractive, gently rolling countryside. There are ample shops, pubs and restaurants. The national golf centre is here and the courses are listed as being among the top fifty in the world.
617 Dambusters squadron were based here during WW2 and there is a splendid memorial to them in the centre of the village.
A couple of miles away is Tattershall castle which is owned by the National Trust. The castle stands at 110 feet and is unusual in that it built of brick.
To the northeast lie the Lincolnshire Wolds. This range of hills offers some lovely views and quiet, relatively undiscovered countryside. We drove across the Wolds to Skegness and although we didn’t linger there (miles of leisure parks and static caravans are just not our scene) the drive was great.
Lincoln is a city not to be missed. Dominating the countryside for miles around, the cathedral and castle sit atop a crag, with the rest of the city spilling down and around the sides. If you visit the cathedral, which is a must, take the time to join a guided tour. The tour is free and our guide was knowledgeable, humorous, and very easy to listen to.
This is our second visit to the area and we will definitely be back.
