Sunnydene Farm Caravan Club CL North Norfolk
To those of you who thought my review of Whey Curd Farm CL was no use to man with child or beast, I want to make amends. You see I have a friend. Yes, I know most people have more than one friend, but it is this particular friend who will interest you because she has a dog. So when she and her husband said that they would like to go to the Norfolk coast with us for a few days, we had to have a look round for another site.
And did we strike lucky!
Sunnydene Farm on the edge of South Creake, eight miles from Wells and six miles from Fakenham, isn’t a farm at all but a bungalow separated from the caravan site by a pretty little water garden. The site itself is a large, flat, well-mown grass area and in one corner there is a climbing frame and slide for small children. At the edge of the site is a newly built barn containing two separate toilets for men and women and a shower, all of which are kept in immaculate condition by the owner.
The nearest seaside town is Wells Next The Sea, a complete misnomer because it is actually over a mile from the sea, but it has all the important things in life such as fish and chip shops and a rock shop. You can walk along the sea defence wall or ride in the little tourist train to get to the beach, or if you are not so energetic, you can park nearby for £3. Since the sea has deposited a huge mound of sand near the entrance to the beach the tide now leaves a large expanse of mud behind it, but those in the know just walk out the back of the car park and through the pinewoods for a couple of hundred yards where you can emerge onto glorious miles of golden sand. It’s a lovely walk to go through the pinewoods for two and a half miles to Holkham and then back along the beach. Alternatively you can park at Holkham and do the walk in reverse, which has the advantage of a seat and a drink at the refreshment hut in the car park at Wells before walking back. The latest attraction this year is sea trips from Wells out to see the seals on Blakeney Point.
There is another enormous expanse of sand and a golf course at Brancaster, which also boasts a wreck sticking up out of the sand some way out.
When you tire of the beautiful beaches visit Holkham Hall [pronounced Hoccum] home of the Coke family [pronounced Cook] and Earls of Leicester [pronounced Lester] The house and its contents are magnificent, but there is also a museum of bygones that are fascinating, and a large park with a lake and deer herd to be admired. If you are a chocoholic there is a chocolate shop in Fakenham, which sells rejects and seconds very cheaply and if you are glued to your e-mails Sunnydene Farm offers free wireless broadband. It doesn’t get any better.
